Some courses have only outline details listed below - BABO is keen to give dates and names of speakers as they become available and will update the listing as soon as relevant information is known.

Certification Course

The Certificate in Behavioural Optometry is open to BABO members who have completed OVT1, 2, 3 and 4 (or comparable). It is intended to be in recognition of evidence of further study and experience in the field of Behavioural Optometry.  Candidates should have completed at least fifty patient cases before enrolling on the Certification Course.  Candidates who successfully pass the course will become a Fellow of the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists (FBABO) and this will be noted on the list of accredited members. Maintenance of FBABO membership will be dependent upon maintaining regular CET.

The Certification course started for the second time on 2nd January 2008 and comprises:-

Part 1

i. 4 open book questions; to be successfully completed by 1/10/08, before registering on Part 2 of the course. Candidates can choose to take more time on their open book question answers and defer completion to 1/10/10, before taking the exam day in April 2011.

Part 2

ii. 4 case studies to be handed in by 31/1/09, or by 31/1/11 if taking 3 years to complete the open book questions.
iii.Exam Day - 4th October 2009 in Warwick; April 2011

- 60 min examination of 40 MCQs.

- Viva – a one hour oral examination, with two examiners, covering any aspect of behavioural optometry, detailed discussions of the case studies, and may include a discussion of the open book answers.

Revision days will be arranged as required before the examination day.

Autism

Suitable for: Anyone with an interest in behavioural optometry and autism.

Outline: Nancy Torgerson is an accomplished speaker on Autism, particularly the practical aspects of therapy.

This is the most requested subject for a course by BABO members, so do book early!

Optometric Vision Therapy

 

Introduction to Behavioural Optometry (OVT1A)

Suitable for: Optometrists and therapists wishing to learn about Behavioural Optometry.  Essential courses for those who wish to become BABO accredited.
Venue: Quality Hotel, St Albans
Course Leader: Paul Adler
Outline: The combined course will cover behavioural philosophy, assessment and treatment of accommodation, convergence, fusional problems, eye movements as well as near point stress, four circles and near point retinoscopy (delegates will need to bring a retinoscope).  Plenty of time will be devoted to trying out treatment techniques and for discussions. Each delegate will receive a free starter kit of OVT equipment for the activities taught on the course.

Suitable for: Optometrists experienced in VT - must have previously taken OVT1-3.

Outline:

Rob Lewis is a behavioural optometrist with exceptional experience in the enhancement of visual functioning for those limited by strabismus.  He works with all ages in his practice in Phoenix, Arizona.

He will present the OVT4 course, reviewing all aspects of classical optometric assessment and, in parallel, will be presenting his model of care that allows every optometrist experienced in VT to develop additional skills to help their patients.

International Congress of Behavioural Optometry (ICBO)

Dates:

8th - 11th April 2010

Suitable for: BABO members and other optometrists interested in behavioural optometry.
Venue: Ontario, California, USA
General Information: THis congress is run once every four years and in 2010 is being combined with the NORA (Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association) conference, so there will be some dual track programmes with an emphasis on traumatic brain injury.

There will be many excellent speakers and this is a good opportunity to meet behavioural optometrists from around the world.
